Often when people read this prayer they think what, am I supposed to give up everything, sell everything and live like a hermit and follow Jesus. No, that is not what this prayer means. It means you deny yourself the things of this world that you know aren’t right, and perhaps even sinful. You start there. Those “things” are different for everyone; it could be your greed for more material stuff, your lust for someone who is already spoken for, your excessive use of alcohol or other vices. The list is endless. When you earnestly try to follow Jesus, the worldly things seem less important, yet they have a strong tug on us; that is what you are to deny and let go out of your life.
